Japan: Spouses Can Work Part-Time
If a foreign national holds a Dependent visa in Japan, s/he is unable to work. However, the Immigration Bureau will allow the spouse to work part time (less than 28 hours/week) if s/he provides an offer/contract from a Japanese employer and requests a special Work Permit. The contract must include the position, job duties, hours/week, salary and signatures from both parties. The authorization to work takes approximately two weeks. Becoming a part-time employee does not require a status change; the Bureau will issue a Permit that gives "Permission to engage in activity other than what is permitted under the status of residence previously granted." This document comes in the form of a letter (A4 size) -- see embedded document.
Thank you PLG-Japan for this important update!
